Chapter Fourteen

Aunt Therese and I walk into the hospital like we belong here and know exactly where we’re going. The place is busy, with both medical staff and patients bustling around. We breeze past the front desk without being challenged, and I follow my aunt to the elevator, where she punches the button for the third floor.

“How do you know where to go?” I ask as the elevator rises. Aunt Therese has fire magic, and I wouldn’t have thought that would give her the ability to track someone down.

“Before we left the council chambers, Dallas helped us locate you both. This is where Xander was then. Hopefully he’s still here.”

I swallow at the mention of Dallas. I didn’t know he could use his air magic to find people. Mind you, there’s a lot I don’t know about magic.

I’m opening my mouth to tell my aunt about what Dallas did to us in the library, when the elevator doors open and a muffled shout distracts me. It’s Xander’s voice, but I can’t make out what he’s yelling.

I exchange a worried glance with my aunt before we hurry up the hallway, rushing past the open doors of several wards where patients are chatting with visitors or watching T.V.

Xander yells again, and we follow the sound around several corners and through a door. Inside a small room, Xander is lying on a bed, his wrists and ankles fastened to the bed’s metal rails. His irises are mostly blue, though they’re circled with red, as though the demon is fighting for control.

“Get away,” he’s shouting. “Don’t touch me! It wants to hurt you. It’ll kill you!”

His mother is bending over him, her eyes wide and her face pale. “Please stop, Xander," she pleads. "This isn't you. Wherever you’ve gone, please come back."

Therese moves forward, and the mayor looks up, her face hardening when she sees me behind my aunt. "What the hell are you doing here?"

“We've come to save Xander.” Aunt Therese sounds calm.

“She's the one who did this to him.” Xander's mother points an accusing finger at me.

“She's just as much a victim as Xander.” Aunt Therese puts her hands out in a placating gesture.

Xander’s face contorts and his eyes roll into the back of his head. When they roll back, his irises are blood red.

“Sapphira and Theresa.” His slow drawl sounds smug and he gives us a horrible smirk. “You have no idea what’s coming, do you? I’m so pleased you’re here. I’m going to enjoy watching you die.”

My hands clench into fists. “Stop it,” I growl.

Xander closes his eyes. A moment later, he flicks them open. His irises are pale blue once more, and anguish is carved into every line of his face.

“You all have to leave right now.” Xander’s voice is his own again. “He's coming. He’s so close, he’ll be here any minute. You have to go.”

“Who’s coming?” asks Aunt Therese.

“I'm not leaving without you." I say at the same time.

"It's too late for me. Just go." Xander's irises
